How long crypto exchange development really takes

A week for a spot build, days from existing work, and the three things that actually move the date. Where the time goes, stage by stage.

How long crypto exchange development really takes

Timelines in this market run from "48 hours" to "nine months" for something described in identical words. Both are true for different products. Here is where the time actually goes.

The honest numbers

  • From work already built: days, once the changes are agreed. The groundwork exists; you are paying for the differences.
  • From scratch, spot exchange: about a week.
  • P2P, derivatives, or several chains: scoped rather than estimated, because the spread between versions is enormous.

What those assume: one or two pairs, one chain, a working console, manual withdrawal approval at launch. That is a venue you can run, not a demo.

Where the week goes

1. Scope and infrastructure. Requirement agreed, server and accounts created in your name, domain pointed.

2. Engine and custody. The matching or quote engine, balances, deposits and withdrawals per chain. The bulk of the work.

3. Console. Pairs, fees, approvals, limits, user states.

4. Trader interface. Last, deliberately, so it is built against something real.

5. Test copy. You trade against it, approve a withdrawal, try to break your own rules.

6. Deployment and handover. TLS, backups, monitoring, the repository in your hands.

What actually moves the date

Decisions. Not engineering. A week becomes three while someone decides which chains, which fee model, and what the withdrawal policy is. Every unanswered question is idle time.

Chains. Each one is address derivation, confirmation rules, fee estimation and its own failure modes. The second chain is nearly as much work as the first.

Compliance. If a KYC provider is involved, their onboarding runs on their schedule, not yours, and it is frequently the longest pole.

Nobody has ever been delayed by the matching engine. They are delayed by a decision nobody wanted to make and a provider nobody chased.

What you can do to make it fast

  • Answer the five questions in one page before asking for a quote: pairs, chains, users, fee model, jurisdiction. How to build your own exchange lays those out.
  • Launch with one chain and add the second after.
  • Accept manual withdrawal approval at first, which is safer anyway.
  • Start KYC provider onboarding on day one if you need one, in parallel with the build.

Questions

How long does it take to build a crypto exchange

About a week for a spot exchange from scratch, and days when it starts from a platform already built. Derivatives, P2P and multi chain builds are scoped rather than estimated.

Why do some agencies quote six months

Because they are describing a different product and a different organisation: a team, a compliance function and a roadmap. For a working spot venue under your own brand, that timeline is not what the engineering requires.

What delays an exchange build most

Unmade decisions, extra chains and third party onboarding, in that order. The engine itself is rarely on the critical path.

Can an exchange be built in 48 hours

Only by rebranding something that already exists, which is a legitimate product and should be described as such rather than as a build.

Can I add chains after launch

Yes, and it is the recommended path. One chain at launch, more later, each quoted on its own because each one is real work.

When can I see something working

Midway through the week there is a test copy you can trade against with fake money. That is deliberately before the interface is finished, because it is the behaviour you need to check.

Building one of these?

From past work, from $499. From scratch, from $999. The source code is yours either way, unencrypted.
