Why crypto exchange quotes range from $500 to $500,000

Agency blogs quote six figures while the open market clears under a thousand dollars. Both numbers are real. Here is what each one is actually buying.

Why crypto exchange quotes range from $500 to $500,000

Search for what a crypto exchange costs and the first page says eighty thousand to five hundred thousand dollars. Look at where buyers actually post these projects and the median project clears a few hundred. That gap is not a mistake and it is not all marketing. It is two different things wearing the same name.

What the six figure quote buys

  • An organisation. Account managers, project managers, a sales team, an office, and the overhead of all of it.
  • A team per discipline. Separate people for backend, frontend, DevOps, QA and design, which is how enterprises prefer to buy.
  • Process. Documentation, sign off stages, change control, and the audit trail an enterprise procurement function requires.
  • Insurance and contracts, with liability that a solo developer cannot offer.
  • Scope you may not need. Margin trading, a dozen chains, a mobile app, an institutional API, all specified before anyone asked whether you have users.

If you are a funded company buying from a procurement department, that is a real product and the price is honest.

What the low end actually is

The open market for this work is enormous, and most of it clears under a thousand dollars. That is not all junk. It splits into three:

  • A front end with a demo backend. Looks finished, cannot take a deposit. This is most of the very cheap end.
  • A rebrand of something already built. Genuinely useful, genuinely fast, honestly priced if described accurately.
  • A real build by someone who has built it before. Cheap because the groundwork exists and there is no organisation to fund.

The first is the reason people distrust the price. The third is the reason the price is possible.

The expensive quote is mostly not software. The cheap quote is sometimes not software either. The question is which part of each you are paying for.

How to tell which you are looking at

Ask the questions that only have one good answer:

  • What happens when the chain reorganises after a deposit is credited?
  • Can I see the operator console, live, approving a withdrawal?
  • Who holds the keys after launch?
  • Will the source be in my repository, readable, before final payment?

A six figure vendor and a four hundred dollar vendor can both pass or fail those. The price does not predict the answer, which is the whole point. The full checklist goes further.

Where our numbers come from

$499 when a build starts from a platform already built and demoed, $999 from scratch, hosting at ten to twenty dollars a month, and a domain at about twenty a year. There is no organisation to fund, no revenue share, and no per trade cut. The constraint is honest: we scope to what a working venue needs rather than to what a feature list can contain.

Where a build genuinely needs more, derivatives, several chains, a custody policy written by a compliance officer, it is quoted per project and said out loud rather than hidden in a round number.

Questions

Why do crypto exchange quotes vary so much

Because the same phrase covers a front end demo, a rebranded existing platform, a working custom build, and an enterprise engagement with a team and a process. The price tracks what is being sold, not the software.

Is a cheap crypto exchange build always bad

No. Some of it is a front end with no working backend, and some of it is a real build on existing groundwork. The four technical questions separate them far better than price does.

What justifies a six figure exchange quote

An organisation, a team per discipline, formal process, contractual liability, and usually a much larger scope. For a funded company buying through procurement that is a genuine product.

How do I verify a developer before paying

Ask about reorg handling, ask to see the console approving a withdrawal, ask who holds the keys, and require the source in your repository before final payment.

Does the price include hosting

Hosting is yours, in your name, at ten to twenty dollars a month for a basic build. A quote that omits it has priced building the venue but not running it.

What if my project genuinely needs more

Then it is scoped and quoted per project. Derivatives, multiple chains and compliance heavy custody are real work, and pretending otherwise would just move the surprise later.

Building one of these?

From past work, from $499. From scratch, from $999. The source code is yours either way, unencrypted.
